How a Night in the Woods Strengthened My Faith

A Walk into the Unknown

In my late twenties, I lived near Pine Log Wildlife Management Area in Georgia. Every spring, I enjoyed hunting wild turkeys and trout fishing along the creeks. In 1993, the aftermath of the “Storm of the Century”—the Blizzard of ’93—had left trees scattered across trails and creeks, setting the stage for one unforgettable evening.

With the access gate closed early in the season, I parked and hiked up a dirt road to fish downstream toward my Jeep. The day began peacefully, but I didn't realize I was heading into complete darkness—with no moonlight and no awareness of how the storm had transformed the landscape.

Into the Wilderness

As dusk settled, I attempted to cut through the woods, believing the road would be nearby. Instead, I encountered hills, feeder streams, and an increasingly disorienting route. Eventually, I found myself back at the same field I had tried to exit earlier—completely turned around.

With nightfall swallowing every trace of light, I had no flashlight and couldn't see my own hand in front of me. I tried to follow the creek back, but every step was hindered by fallen trees and briars. Fear crept in. Panic was close behind.

Guided by Scripture

What kept me grounded wasn’t survival instinct—it was scripture.

I prayed Proverbs 3:6:

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

I quoted Psalm 119:105 again and again:

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

That Word was not metaphorical—it was the only light I had. Inch by inch, I navigated the darkness, clinging not to visibility but to faith. By 10 PM, bruised and bloodied, I finally saw the glow of the check-in station. Relief. Grace.

The Light Still Shines

I don’t know your story. I don’t know what stage of life you're in. But I do know this: our God remains faithful.

When you feel disoriented, trapped, or overwhelmed by darkness—His Word is your light. His promises never fail. If He guided me through a chaotic wilderness, He can guide you through whatever you face today. Lean into Him. He will meet you there.
